President of Uganda Yoweri Kaguta Museveni has emphasized that the government's push for digital number plates are for national security measure aimed at combating crime, not for EPS fines.
Yoweri Museveni made the clarification during of the 2025/26 national budget in Kampala Kololo grouds noting that the issue at the hand goes for beyond financial penalties.
The issue concerning digital number plates is not about fines, it's about crime prevention," Museven said.
He noted that, Every vehicle must have digital number plates that can be traced by a central authority ,allowing for the monitoring of cars and boda bodas.
The new digital number plates system is a part of government's efforts to enhance surveillance and intelligence , particularly in urban areas where vehicles assisted crimes have surged years ago.
He added, people are acting with impunity,and this concern extends beyond more fines ,it's about ensuring the safety and security for all Ugandans
